In loving memory
NewsChopper 4
Tuesday, September 15, 2026 · Chatsworth, Los Angeles
On the evening of Tuesday, September 15, NewsChopper 4 flew out to Chatsworth to report on a Metro bus crash that had just taken the lives of two passengers, Danny Castillo and Gage Weida. Just before 7 p.m. the helicopter came down a few blocks away, and three more people lost their lives: reporter Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw, and Edy Fernando Gutiérrez Mejia, a 29-year-old visiting from Guatemala who was on the ground below.
Five people died in Chatsworth that evening. This page remembers all of them.

The crew of NewsChopper 4
Eliana Moreno
Aerial reporter for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 · 38
Eliana dreamed of becoming a news reporter from the time she was 11, her family says. She grew up in Tustin, went to Foothill High School and graduated from Chapman University in 2010, the year she joined Angel City Air, the company that flew NewsChopper 4.
She reported from the air in English for NBC4 and in Spanish for Telemundo 52. Telemundo 52 calls her the only bilingual reporter whose office was a helicopter, and says that for 16 years she kept the community informed. In 2023 she shared a Golden Mike award with the NBC4 team. A California Highway Patrol spokesman told Telemundo 52 that she was always alert, and watched over officers from above. NBC4 morning co-anchor Lynette Romero remembered her this way: “She’s teeny-tiny, but she had the biggest heart and enthusiasm.”
On Instagram she was “Eli in the heli,” and she called herself a dog and chicken mom. She was engaged to be married, and she leaves her parents, her fiancé, her stepsons and five brothers and sisters. Her family says they find comfort in knowing she “left this world doing the very thing she loved.”
George Marciniw
Pilot, NewsChopper 4
George was a Burbank man all his life. He went to John Muir Middle School and graduated from Burbank High in 1974, and Burbank’s mayor says he still lived in the city.
He is believed to have flown for more than 30 years, and more than 14,000 hours by NBC News’ count. He also taught other people to fly. Esteban Jimenez, a pilot George once taught, had known him since the 1990s and says he was close to retiring. From 2023 George and Eliana flew together, often on the evening shift, through the January 2025 wildfires and more police chases than anyone could count. NBC4 meteorologist Belen De Leon put it simply: “When you thought about NewsChopper4, you thought about George.”
At the Ukrainian Catholic church in East Hollywood, where he had gone since he was a boy, people knew him as “Yurko,” and his priest hopes to name the pew where George usually sat after him. His neighbor of 11 years remembers him as sweet and kind, and hopes the lavender he planted will keep growing. At The Blue Room in Burbank he was “Helicopter George”: a friend there says the crew sometimes flew over the patio on the way back to the airport, and people would come out and wave.
Visiting from Guatemala
Edy Fernando Gutiérrez Mejia
Of Cuilapa, Guatemala · 29
Edy came from Cuilapa, a town in Guatemala’s Santa Rosa department, where people knew him as “Pichi.” He had come to Los Angeles on business. A friend back home remembered a cheerful, hard-working young man who was always there for anyone who needed him. His parents shared photographs of him with a Telemundo news team that traveled to Cuilapa: Edy smiling in the snow, and Edy holding a trophy on a soccer field. His hometown asked for prayers for his eternal rest, and for God to give his family patience in their sorrow. As of September 16, his family was working to bring him home.
On the Metro bus
Daniel “Danny” Castillo
Father of four · 46
Danny’s family was everything to him, his cousin says, and his laugh was contagious. His loved ones remember a jokester who lit up every room he walked into, and a selfless man who always made time for his family. His daughter says he brought laughter and light into everyone’s lives. That Tuesday he was on his way home from work and had just gotten on the bus.
Gage Weida
Son and partner · 31
Gage’s partner of eight years called him “one in a million.” His father remembers a big teddy bear with a heart of gold, who loved everybody and loved life. He would have turned 32 that Saturday, September 19, and his family had already planned a trip to celebrate with him. That Tuesday he was on his way to work, where, a co-worker says, he was always on time.
What happened
The bus crash
Just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, an SUV heading south in the northbound lanes of De Soto Avenue ran the red light at Nordhoff Street and hit the side of an eastbound Metro Line 166 bus, police say. Two passengers, Danny Castillo and Gage Weida, died. Six other people were taken to the hospital, among them the bus operator and the SUV driver.
Police arrested the SUV driver. On Thursday, September 17, the District Attorney charged her in the bus crash with two counts of murder, driving under the influence of a drug, and reckless driving. As of September 21, 2026, she had not been charged in connection with the helicopter crash. Asked whether she would be, the District Attorney said his office would wait to see what comes out of the federal investigation. She is presumed innocent.
The last flight
NewsChopper 4 was one of several news helicopters that went up to cover the crash. It took off from a nearby airport at 5:20 p.m., with George flying and Eliana reporting for NBC4 and Telemundo 52. Telemundo 52 says her last Spanish-language report, about the deadly bus crash, ran more than 20 minutes.
Just before 7 p.m., the helicopter came down in the parking lot of a self-storage business on North Mason Avenue, a few blocks from the bus crash. Eliana, George and Edy died there.
That night NBC4 and Telemundo 52 said they were deeply saddened, and sent their condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who died. At 11 p.m., NBC4 anchor Colleen Williams opened the news by telling viewers, with heavy hearts, that the station had lost “valued friends and colleagues.”
The investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the helicopter crash, and the Federal Aviation Administration is taking part. Investigators spent two days at the site. On Thursday, September 17, the wreckage was removed, to be examined at a secure facility. Airbus Helicopters, which built the aircraft, is helping.
The NTSB said it expected a preliminary report in about 30 days, which would be around mid-October, and a final report on the cause in up to 18 months. As of September 21, 2026, it had not said what caused the crash, and we will not guess.
How Los Angeles remembered them
On the night of the crashes, Mayor Karen Bass mourned the loss of “five Angelenos.” Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sheriff Robert Luna and Sen. Alex Padilla sent their condolences. Two days later, on Thursday, September 17, families, neighbors and city leaders gathered outside St. John Eudes Parish in Chatsworth for a candlelight vigil for all five while a choir sang. “Tonight we remember them not simply as victims, but as people deeply loved,” Councilmember John Lee said. A memorial with portraits of all five was set up outside the church, to stay through the weekend.
Flowers, cards and notes gathered at the crash site, at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, where NewsChopper 4 was based, and outside the NBC4 and Telemundo 52 studios in Universal City. The cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz drew NewsChopper 4 in the sky with a halo where its rotor blades should be.
On Sunday, September 20, George’s parish, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, remembered him and Eliana at Mass.
The Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation is building a memorial at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to journalists who died reporting the news. On September 16, its chairman, David Dreier, said Eliana and George lost their lives “going toward a breaking story so that the public could be informed,” and that “their service will not be forgotten.”
Eliana’s family asked everyone to keep all five in their thoughts and prayers: Eliana, George, Edy, Danny and Gage.
Forever part of our sky.
